It is easy to find fake goods in Bangkok’s markets. They seem to be just about everywhere. Do you ever wonder where they come from?
Some are produced here in Thailand, of course, but many arrive from other countries, especially by sea. That was the case with one large shipment that Customs officials were recently able to seize from a ship off the coast of Songkhla in the Gulf of Thailand.
The Customs Department confiscated untaxed and pirated items worth an estimated 33 million baht from the ship.
The goods, including chainsaws, wood, diesel fuel and liquor, were seized 10 nautical miles off Koh Nu before they could be smuggled ashore, Customs deputy director-general Somchai Poolsavasdi told a news conference on Monday.
The haul included 700 chainsaws worth 10.5 million baht, logs and processed wood valued at 5.6 million baht, 15,000 litres of diesel worth 3.5 million baht and 1,154 bottles of spirits and wine worth 2.5 million baht.
Officers also found 8,433 items of imitation goods worth 6.1 million baht, mainly perfume, bags, glasses and name brand clothing.
Mr Somchai said the owner of the goods would face various charges under the Customs, Forestry and Copyright acts.
